Galataport in Istanbul

The grandiose investment project, which cost $1.7 billion, has significantly changed the image of the historical center of Istanbul. Today we will tell you about Galataport.

Located on the European shore of the Bosphorus, Galataport is a harmonious blend of past and present, where cultural heritage is intertwined with innovative solutions.

The idea for Galataport dates back to the early 2000s, when the city authorities thought about how to transform the abandoned Karaköy embankment into a dynamic center of international tourism and cultural life. The project took more than a decade to realize and officially opened in October 2021, becoming a key element of the city's tourism ecosystem.

With an area of approximately 400,000 m², Galataport houses 52,000 m² of commercial space as well as 250,000 m² of office and residential spaces.

This project plays an important role not only as a business and tourism hub, but also as a major international cruise port, receiving up to 1.5 million passengers annually.

One of the most innovative features of Galataport is its unique cruise infrastructure system, which allows it to serve liners up to 350 meters long.

Unlike most of the world's traditional ports, an innovative concept of underground terminals has been applied here, thanks to which passengers can leave the ship under the city streets without disturbing the historic appearance of the neighborhood.

Galataport has also taken a significant step towards creating an accessible urban environment. It has organized extensive pedestrian zones designed with the needs of less-mobile citizens in mind, making walking comfortable for all Istanbul residents and visitors.

But Galataport is more than just port infrastructure. It has created a space for international cultural events and exhibitions. It is home to the Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art (10,000 m²), more than 200 stores and 40 restaurants with a variety of gastronomic concepts.

Since its opening, Galataport has become one of the most popular attractions in the city, attracting more than 7 million visitors annually, including cruise tourists and residents of the metropolis.
