Yanartash: The mystery of eternal fire and ancient legends

For over 2500 years, fire has been bursting out of the bowels of the earth of Yanartaş Mountain, creating one of the most mystical and picturesque places in Turkey. Located near the resort of Kemer, this natural wonder attracts tourists with its mysterious history and extraordinary scenery.

The legend of Chimera

Ancient Greek mythology is associated with Yanartash. According to the legend, this territory was inhabited by Chimera, a creature with the body of a lion, the head of a goat and a snake's tail, from the mouth of which flames burst out. The monster was defeated by the hero Bellerophontes, who defeated it with the help of his winged horse Pegasus. However, according to legend, even after the death of the Chimera, the fire continued to burn, coming out of the ground, which became a symbol of the area.

Natural phenomenon

"Eternal fires" of Yanartash are a natural phenomenon caused by methane and other combustible gases escaping to the surface through cracks in the rocks. The gas ignites on contact with air, creating persistent flames that burn at all hours of the day.

At night, these flames look particularly impressive, illuminating the mountainsides and creating a magical atmosphere. Flame tongues reach a height of up to one meter, their number varies from 10 to 20 sources.

To visit the "burning mountain" you will have to make a short hike along a picturesque forest path. The route lasts about 20-30 minutes and passes through a pine forest. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, as the path can be rocky in places.

Parking is located a few kilometers from the trailhead. The trail leads to the summit, where you can enjoy stunning views of the coastline.
